用丁基防水嵌縫膠作中空玻璃密封膠是中空玻璃生產上的一大突破，它同傳統的鋁條法中空玻璃相比，有以下優點:

(1)由于丁基防水嵌縫膠本身就有很強的粘結性能，所以使用丁基防水嵌縫膠作中空玻璃封條不需要再涂底膠，直接升溫便可與玻璃很好地粘接在一起。

(2)它有很好的耐熱性和耐候性，在很寬的溫度范圍內可以長期使用。

(3)由于丁基防水嵌縫膠比較柔軟，四角不需彎角栓連接，自然成型，從而避免了角部漏氣的問題，所以有很好的密封性能。

(4)由于它的柔軟，也使得這種密封膠具有良好的減振作用和隔音效果。

但是由于丁基防水嵌縫膠在結構與性能上的缺點，使它作為中空玻璃密封膠時還存在一些不足:

(1)強度不夠。由于其太柔軟，所以根本不能承受外界壓力，改善的方法就是在膠條中間夾一條鋁帶以增加其強度。

(2)丁基防水嵌縫膠的氣體滲透系數較大(約為10-15"d "cm)，這樣氣體容易通過密封膠層向中空玻璃中空層滲透擴散，時間一長，就會出現起霧現象，從而影響中空玻璃的使用壽命。改善的方法就是在中空玻璃的裝配過程中使用雙道密封操作，第一道先用丁基防水嵌縫膠，外面再用一道丁基防水嵌縫膠，或者采用復合膠條密封技術。http://www.caffertyclinic.com/
